It is believed that by working these reflexes it can aid relaxation and improve physical and emotional wellbeing . When our body is in a state of imbalance due to stress, illness or disease it is prevented from functioning correctly. Reflexology aims to restore the body to homeostsis (balance).

History of Reflexology
Reflexology is an ancient practice originating from Egypt, India and China, Hieroglyphics from the tomb of a physician named Ankhmahor shows two figures receiving both hand and feet therapy.
It was brought to the Western world in the early 1900s by Dr. William Fitzgerald an ear, nose and throat specialist. He separated the body into ten longitudinal zones which run from the top of the head to the tips of the fingers and toes with five zones on each side of the body, he discovered that by stimulating the energy flow in one area of a zone this would affect the whole of the zone. He demonstrated that this could relieve pain and even used it as an anaesthetic for minor surgery.
In the 1930s a physiotherapist named Eunice Ingram was using zone therapy in her work she found that the feet were the most responsive area for working the zones as they were extremely sensitive. She mapped the feet with all the corresponding glands and organs and created what we now know as Reflexology. Eunice Ingram is now known as the Mother of Reflexology.
