Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is an award winning reflexology technique focussing on stimulating the lymphatic reflexes on the feet to bring about a positive change in the lymphatic system of the body. The technique was developed and researched by Sally Kay BSc (Hons) whilst working in Cancer Care.
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition causing swelling in the body's tissues it occurs when the lymphatic system doesn't work correctly it usually occurs in the arms or legs but can affect any part of the body.
Lymphoedema is a debilitating progressive condition and currently there is no cure available. The main symptom of lymphoedema is swelling and may cause pain and heaviness in the affected area. Movement may become restricted. Psychological side effects may include anxiety and depression and a loss of confidence.
Primary Lymphoedema
Caused by an intrinsic hereditary congenital defect of the lymphatic system. May be present or develop at birth or during infancy but is more likely to occur in times of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy or menopause.
Secondary Lymphoedema
Caused by an extrinsic factor damage to the lymphatic system possible causes include surgery, radiation, insect bites, trauma from accidents. Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, approximately 20% of these patients develop secondary lymphoedema following there cancer treatment.
RLD can be used on the hands or the feet it is a non invasive, gentle and calming technique working on the same principles of Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).
MLD is used to treat conditions other than lymphoedema and RLD may be used similarly to support clients. RLD may also be beneficial for clients with non cancer related inflammatory or autoimmune disorders.
